What Is The Definition Of Safety In Football?
1. This refers to when the offensive player who has possession of the football is tackled or willingly downs the ball in their end zone. The defensive team is not only awarded two points, but is also awarded the next possession of the football. The team who gave up the points from the safety must then perform a punt, kick, or drop kick from their own 20-yard line. Unlike on kickoffs, a kicking tee is not allowed to be used.
2. This is also the name of a specific defensive back position in football. There are two safety positions on the defensive side of the ball and they’re referred to as the strong safety and the free safety. Safeties tend to line up anywhere 10 to 15 yards away from the line of scrimmage and are considered the last line of defense against the offense.
What Is The Difference Between A Touchback And A Safety?
A touchback occurs when a team on defense intercepts, recovers a fumble, or otherwise gains possession of the ball in their own endzone and is downed.
If the defensive team gains possession of the football and then runs into their own endzone and is downed, the team that gave up the turnover but then downed the runner acquires a safety, as the player willingly entered the endzone.
What Is A One-Point Safety?
A one-point safety can only happen when a team attempts an extra point or two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. Then, either team must be tackled or commit a foul in their defensive end zone. This most likely occurs when a team defending the extra point or two-point conversion attempt recovers the ball and then runs into their endzone and is downed; then, the team that attempted the conversion is awarded a conversion safety worth one point.
A one-point safety, or conversion safety, hardly ever occurs. In fact, the NFL has never seen a conversion safety in the entirety of its history.
The conversion safety could not even happen in the NFL until 2015, as prior to the rule change, the ball was declared down if the offense lost possession.
Examples Of How Safety Is Used In Commentary
1. With the offense lined up on their own two-yard line, the linebacker blows through the A-Gap and sacks the quarterback in the end zone for a safety.
2. The Packers’ free safety hustles over to help the cornerback, jumps in front of Bears wide receiver Allen Robinson and catches the interception.
